And the Big Surprise... Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez is Going Green with her Holiday Card This Year!

And your favorite non-profit could be the big winner!

December 1, 2009 (Santa Ana, CA) – Last week, we told you that a big surprise was in store for Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez's annual holiday cards this year. After years of mailing cards to constituents, friends, and family, Loretta is doing something different this year - she is going green with her holiday card!

Rather than print thousands of cards this year, Loretta will instead make donations to Orange County non-profits in need by sponsoring a holiday donation competition.

"In light of these tough economic times and given the continued focus on climate change and the need to do more to protect our environment, there was no question that for the first time ever, the right thing for me to do this year was to go green with my holiday cards," said Sanchez. "Those who typically receive my cards will still receive my card, only this year they will receive an electronic version. And with the money we normally spend on printing and mailing the cards, my campaign will give donations to needy non-profits in Orange County through a competitive application process."

Politico: Holiday frolic with Loretta Sanchez

One of the ways congressional staffers mark the holidays is with California Democratic Rep. Loretta Sanchez’s holiday card. How zany is it this year?

Sanchez isn’t saying, but it’s due to drop Tuesday, when her website unveils it.

“I don’t know why people get so mean about them,” she says of her cards. “Do you think you can’t be serious just because you’re on a motorcycle?” referring to last year’s card.

As for her December, she’s going to be one busy gal. “Well, one of the problems that we have [in Congress] is that we don’t know whether we really are going to have a health care bill to try to vote on from the House side again,” Sanchez points out. “We’ve been told we could be working here until the 22nd or 24th. It kind of puts things in flux.”

How does she decide which Washington holiday events to go to? “It depends on how tired I am! You’ll have four or five on your list. You take the last vote, and you’re going home at that point. You’re beat! But one of your colleagues says, ‘Come on, we’re going over to the firefighters [party].’ That’s how you decide.”
